Structure and Layout

  • Name sheets so they are unique and easy to understand.
  • Remove unused sheets.
  • Start the table in cell A1.
  • The first row and/or column should be the heading row.
  • The table should have one heading row, one heading column, or one of each.

Rows and Columns

  • Avoid blank rows or columns.
  • Avoid hiding rows or columns.
  • Avoid freezing rows or columns.

Cells

  • Blank data cells should be marked with “No Data.”
  • Ensure all text is visible without having to adjust cell height or width.
  • Avoid merging or splitting cells.
  • If using images, insert images into cells, not over cells.

Check Accessibility

  • Use the Accessibility Checker add-on to check for accessibility on Google Sheets.
  • Keep in mind that the accessibility checker is not perfect. Use your own judgment to ensure that your document is accessible.
